May marks my 6th month at The Nexus Agency and it’s astonishing how much I’ve learned in such a short space of time. And out of all the things #agencylife has taught me, SEO has got to be one of my favourites.
SEO – Search Engine Optimisation
The act of implementing strategies and tactics through the placement of specific keywords to drive a website search engine ranking up.
When I was first told that I would be doing SEO on different websites, I was instantly afraid! SEO sounds so scary, it’s working with Google and Bing and Yahoo. What do you do? How does it work? Why would they make me do this when I’m still so new?
All valid concerns in my mind.
However, I needn’t have worried. SEO is actually very simple once you know the basics. All you have to do is know what your customers are looking for. How do we find this out?
Ask your customers what they would type in to find your business.
What problem does your product solve?
Every product or service solves a problem.
Product: fancy shoes
Problem: shoes for Ladies Day at Ayr racecourse
Once you’ve established this, you need to select ‘keywords or phrases’ that you will use to optimise your website on search sites such as Google and Bing.
You sell free range eggs in the Ayrshire area. So if your customers were looking for someone selling free range eggs in Ayrshire they would type:
Free range eggs Ayrshire.
To make sure your website pops up on the first page (preferably at the top), you would use the key phrase: Free range eggs Ayrshire. There are a number of ways you can use this key phrase
– re-write your website content and copy
– give images keyword specific titles
– write blog posts using the key phrase
– creating pages specific to your keywords or phrases
Another good way to get your name on the map, so to speak, is to register your business with Google. This means that when people type in your keyword or phrase, your business will come up on the business listings at the side of the page.
So there you have it…
SEO isn’t as scary as it first seems. Although there is ALOT more to it, these steps are great for getting you started on your SEO journey. They certainly helped me.
